PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely perform automatic re-start by inhibiting engine temperatures from decreasing at the automatic stop of an engine. SOLUTION: A compression self-ignition engine is automatically stopped, when engine output is not required, and a preset stopping condition is satisfied, and is automatically started when a preset re-start condition is satisfied after automatic stop of the engine. The stopping condition is set to include being warm time when the engine cooling water temperature is equal to or higher than a predetermined temperature. When the stopping condition is satisfied, an amount of heat dissipation of the engine cooling water is made smaller, for example, by reducing an amount of the engine cooling water circulating around a combustion chamber, compared with a case where the stopping condition is not satisfied due to factors other than the engine cooling water temperature.
