<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique which evades a remarkable solidification delay as one cause of breakout directly below a mold and powder entrainment as the cause of a product sliver defect. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Each of the back face of a narrow mold 8 composing each mold narrow face 1a of a mold 1 is provided with permanent magnet 18 for forming a magnetic field having a vertical component to the mold narrow face 1a. The distance Lu[mm] from the upper edge of the mold 1 to the upper edge of the permanent magnet 18 is 200 to 400. The distance Ld[mm] from the upper edge of the mold 1 to the lower edge of the permanent magnet 18 is 400 to 600. The distance Lmag[mm] from the upper edge to the lower edge in the permanent magnet 18 is 150 to 400. The ratio dmag/D between the mold thickness D[mm] of the mold 1 and the permanent magnet thickness dmag[mm] in the mold thickness direction of the permanent magnet 18 is 0.75 to 1.
