<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection image display apparatus capable of reducing quantity of light to be applied on a liquid crystal display element without causing unevenness in luminance and prolonging service life of optical components. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The projection image display apparatus includes the liquid crystal display element for modulating light intensity of light emitted by a light source, an outgoing side polarizing plate arranged on an outgoing side of the liquid crystal display element, a projection lens for projecting the light passing through the outgoing side polarizing plate, a first lens array having a plurality of lens cells arranged like matrix, a second lens array, and a condenser lens for superimposing a plurality of luminous fluxes coming from the lens cells of the second lens array on the liquid crystal display element. Either or both of the first lens array and the second lens array are moved to change an interval between the first lens array and the second lens array, to reduce quantity of light absorption by the outgoing side polarizing plate by reducing quantity of light to be applied on the liquid crystal element more than usual quantity of light, and to prolong service life of the optical components.
