PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern recognition method, a character recognition method, a pattern recognition program and a character recognition program for efficiently recognizing a pattern. SOLUTION: A pattern processor (11) detects recognition candidates which can be recognition candidates of each step in recognizing a whole pattern configured of partial patterns of a plurality of steps (S71), and expands the recognition candidates of the next step belonging to the recognition candidates of each step (S75), and calculates the evaluation values of the expanded recognition candidates based on posterior probability on condition of all recognition processing results for the recognition candidates which have undergone recognition processing (S76), and selects the prescribed number of recognition candidates in the order of the high evaluation values of the recognition candidates (S73), and when the recognition candidates of a terminal with no recognition candidate of the next step are included in the selected recognition candidates (S74: YES), and the evaluation values of the recognition candidates of the terminal are equal to or more than a prescribed threshold (S78: YES), determines the combination of the recognition candidates of each step based on the recognition candidates of the terminal as recognition results (S80).
