<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose in advance a sub arithmetic processing unit as to whether it is in normal operation to reliably achieve a fail-safe function, to enhance fail-safe reliability when a main arithmetic processing unit fails. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The main arithmetic processing unit transmits failure information to the sub arithmetic processing unit (step S14). The failure diagnosis apparatus determines a failure of the system by determining whether or not the sub arithmetic processing unit achieves a fail-safe function in response thereto (step S15), and whether the electronic control system satisfies a condition obtained by the fail-safe function of the sub arithmetic processing unit (step S17 and step S19) even if the sub arithmetic processing unit achieves the fail-safe function. Therefore, the fault of fail-safe function of the sub arithmetic processing unit can be known in advance, not at the failure of the main arithmetic processing unit. Ž<P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT Ž
