<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a face image from becoming undetectable even though the face image exists in a portion where the face image is highly likely to exist. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A plurality of face image identification devices 11 to 1N, which, if scores obtained by making the features of an image into scores are not lower than a first threshold value, determine the image to be a face image, are connected in cascade to a group of face image identification devices 10. The image that consists of a number of frames like animation is input frame by frame to the group of face image identification devices 10; if the face image is contained in one frame of a subject image, the face image is detected. For the next and subsequent subject images, if face image detection is carried out in an area corresponding to an area around the face image detected, a face image detection process is performed using a second threshold value that is lower than the first threshold value.
