<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal optical element which makes a transparent state stably when not applying a voltage with a liquid crystal composition alone without being combined with polymer and which makes a light diffusion state reversibly when applying a voltage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a nematic liquid crystal, and at least two types of non-hardening optically active substance with different optical rotation directions mutually. The nematic liquid crystal has dielectric constant anisotropy whose absolute value is larger than one. At least one type of the optically active substance has dielectric constant anisotropy whose sign is different from the nematic liquid crystal and whose absolute value is larger than one. The optically active substance having the other optical rotation property out of the optically active substances has a smaller absolute value by one or more of the dielectric constant anisotropy or has dielectric constant anisotropy in the same direction as that of the nematic liquid crystal, the absolute value of the dielectric constant anisotropy as the liquid crystal composition as a whole being one or less, or the sign of the dielectric constant anisotropy being the same as that of the nematic liquid crystal. The liquid crystal optical element is constituted so that such a composition is placed between substrates including a means for orientating the liquid crystal layer on the opposing side of at least one of the substrates with an electrode.
