PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus in which an aperture ratio is increased. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes: a substrate 15, an organic EL element 4 that is formed on the substrate 15 and emits light by means of an electric current flowing therein; a drive transistor T<SB>d</SB>that adjusts, by the application of voltage equal to or higher than a threshold voltage, an amount of current flowing in the organic EL element 4; and a holding capacitor C<SB>s</SB>in which electric charges corresponding to the voltage equal to or higher than the threshold voltage applied to the drive transistor T<SB>d</SB>are accumulated. The holding capacitor C<SB>S</SB>is disposed in an area overlapping the organic EL element 4 in plane view and between the substrate 15 and the organic EL element 4, and transmits light emitted by the organic EL element 4.
