<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method for stably producing polycarbonate excellent in transparency, color tone, heat resistance, moldability, and mechanical strength and having excellent optical characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for producing polycarbonate from a dihydroxy compound component including a dihydroxy compound having at least a structure represented by formula (1):-CH<SB>2</SB>-O- in a molecule and a carbonic acid diester, the dihydroxy compound having the structure represented by formula (1) in a molecule is mixed with the molten carbonic acid diester at a temperature of 70-240°C and pressure of 0.06-0.20 MPa for 0.5-30 hours and then an ester exchange reaction is proceeded at pressure of less than 0.06 MPa to produce the polycarbonate.
