PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent discomfort sound due to high level noise caused by fault occurrence such as error, etc, regarding a transmission apparatus for transmitting an audio signal and an audio signal transmission method. SOLUTION: The transmission apparatus and audio signal transmission method for transmitting/receiving a digital audio signal via digital lines L, O, includes: a digital line terminating section J for performing processing for exchanging a digital audio signal with the digital line; a parity check section Q; a digital filter section R; a D/A converting section G for converting a digital audio signal into an analog audio signal and outputting it; and an output level limiting section S. During a line alert generation period based on digital line side fault information from the digital line terminating section J and error detection information from the parity check section Q and a recovery protection period to which a length of interval in the case of recovery to a normal state is preset, a level of the digital audio signal from the digital filter section R is suppressed by the output level limiting section S, and is inputted to the D/A converting section G.
