<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a method as to display a digitized image of high resolution on a screen of low resolution in the largest possible display size without distortion, and yet to make the image details visible as much as possible. <P>SOLUTION: Selected pixels or subpixels in an input image are detected as support points for determining a region in the input image. To each of regions, the pixels or subpixels are allocated in an output image and the pixels or subpixels in the output image are calculated or selected from the pixels or subpixels disposed in the corresponding region of the input image.
