<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device capable of improving flexibility in the layout of a white reference plate and making an image sensor speed reach a target speed before the image sensor reaches a reading start position. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reading device includes: a first reading plane to mount a manuscript thereon; the white reference plate; the image sensor for reading the manuscript and the white reference plate; a carriage means for carrying the image sensor in the direction parallel to the board surface of the first reading plane; a control means for controlling the carriage means to carry the image sensor to a reading position to read the white reference plate for reading the white reference plate by the image sensor, and for starting carrying the image sensor to the first reading plane side by controlling the carriage means to carry the image sensor from the reading position of the white reference plate to the opposite side to the first reading plane, and for executing manuscript reading processing by the image sensor after the white reference plate is read.
