PURPOSE: A controller compatible with recent USB standards and a method thereof are provided to inactivate power supply on a power line, thereby eliminating an over voltage state. CONSTITUTION: A communication circuit(432) communicates with a downstream device existing outside of an upstream device including a controller through one or more data lines. A detection circuit(434) detects a voltage with a value exceeding a standard value on at least one data line among the data lines. The detection circuit inactivates power supply to the downstream device through one or more power lines.
