PURPOSE: Strip location detecting apparatus and method are provided to facilitate maintenance and to prevent damage during operation by installing all facilities outside a furnace. CONSTITUTION: A strip location detecting apparatus comprises a slit light irradiation unit(10), and a camera(20). The slit light irradiation unit emits slit light(11) onto a strip by a laser. The camera takes an image of the reflective light of the slit light reflected by the strip. The slit light is emitted more widely than the width of the strip. The image-taking region of the camera is set more widely than the emitted area of the slit light. The slit light is emitted around the top surface of a roll(40) transferring the strip. The slit light is widely emitted along the progressing direction of the strip.
