A method of operating a computer to execute a command (e.g. entering a character and/or activating a link) includes, providing an orientation surface 100, carrying a plurality of patterns, each pattern printed on a location on the surface and having a visual characteristic indicative of the location. Providing an image of a pattern and identifying the location in accordance with a visual characteristic of a captured pattern and operating a computer to execute a command associated with the location. The pattern may be associated with a focus point and the visible characteristic a continuous function of the distance between the pattern and the focus point. The pattern may include border regions and cells (fig 1a ,105). The borders may be include sections of lines radiating from a focus point. The patterns may be such that they can be identified even when out of focus. A method and system for locating an imaging device is also set out. The pattern may include a series of circles centred around one or more focus points. |
