Lubricating greases are stabilized against oxidative deterioration by the addition of 0.0001-5 per cent by weight of a 2,41-diaminodiphenyl ether or 2,41-diaminodiphenyl sulphide. The lubricating greases may comprise mineral or synthetic lubricating oils thickened with soaps (e.g. lithium, sodium, calcium, or aluminium soaps, such as lithium or calcium stearate, or aluminium naphthenate and soaps prepared from whale oil, wool grease, inedible fats or tallow), silica, carbon black, polyacrylates or talc. The lubricating grease may contain additional additives such as alcohols, esters, polybutane, sulphurized fatty materials, sulphur- and chlorine-containing compounds, dyes, perfumes, fillers, metal deactivators (e.g. disalicylal diamino propane or ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid tetra-sodium salt), tricresyl phosphate, trialkyl phenols, alkylated diphenylamines, phenyl naphthyl amines, dialkyl phenylene diamines, phenothiazine, organic selenium compounds, corrosion inhibitors, extreme pressure additives and viscosity index improvers. Instead of the 2,41-diaminodiphenyl ether or sulphide, there may be employed a 2,41-dialkylaminodiphenyl ether or sulphide or a corresponding compound wherein one or both of the substituents attached to the nitrogen atoms are alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl groups. In examples, 2,41-diaminodiphenyl ether is added to a lubricating grease consisting of lubricating oil (mineral lubricating oil, bright stock or di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate) thickened with lithium stearate. For comparison purposes, the effect of 4,41-diaminodiphenyl ether as a stabilizer for lithium grease is described. |
