摘要 Catalysts used for polymerizing ethylene in an inert anhydrous medium (see Group IV (a)) comprise (a) a titanium or zirconium compound in which the metal has a valency of less than 3; and (b) an organic, alkali metal compound. Optionally the catalyst may be produced from a titanium or zirconium tri- or tetra-halide and an excess of an organic, alkali metal compound. The catalyst components may be mixed, e.g. in the molar ratio of from 0.1 to 10 to 1, during or before polymerization and in the latter case may be filtered and washed before use. Specified components are the chlorides, bromides and iodides of titanium and zirconium; the methyl, ethyl, amyl, allyl, octadecyl, phenyl, benzyl, naphthyl, fluoryl, anisyl and cyclopentadienyl derivatives of sodium; potassium phenyl and benzyl; and lithium butyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl and benzyl. Media used in the preparation of the catalyst are paraffin oil, benzine, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, benzene, toluene and xylene. Catalysts may be subsequently removed from polymer with materials such as alcohol, alcohol + benzene, steam, water, ammoniacal methanol, and caustic soda.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized in an inert anhydrous medium in the presence of (a) a titanium or zirconium compound in which the metal has a valency of less than 3, and (b) an organic, alkali metal compound. Optionally the catalyst may be produced from a titanium or zirconium tri- or tetra-halide and an excess of the organic, alkali metal compound. The catalyst components may be mixed, e.g. in the molar ratio of from 0.1 to 10 to 1, during or before polymerization and in the latter case the product may be filtered and washed before use. Specified components are the chlorides, bromides and iodides of titanium and zirconium; the methyl, ethyl, amyl, allyl, octadecyl, phenyl, benzyl, naphthyl, fluoryl, anisyl and cyclopentadienyl derivatives of sodium; potassium phenyl and benzyl; and lithium butyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl and benzyl. Media used in the preparation of the catalyst and in the polymerization are paraffin oil, benzene, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, benzene, toluene and xylene. The examples illustrate the continous or intermittent addition of ethylene, and the destruction of catalyst and purification of product polymer with materials such as alcohol, alcohol and benzene, steam, water, ammoniacal methanol and caustic soda. The polymerization processes may be as specified in the parent Specification. The linear polyethylenes obtained may be stretched.
