Driver assistance system and method for controlling it

The system (10) has a laser imager (10.3) for detecting vehicle surrounding. The laser imager outputs signals for providing assistance functions (AF1-AF3). The laser imager is controlled in different operating modes (BA1-BA4). A functional module (10.2) controls the laser imager in the operating modes suitable for the assistance functions during activation of the assistance functions. The operating modes of the imager are manually selected by a driver using an operating device (BE). The operating modes of the laser imager are selected based on an operating parameter i.e. speed, of a vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a driver assistance system.
