The tool i.e. cutting plier (1) has cutting edges (3) by which bone plate (4) is cuttable along a cut surface (5) in a cutting position. A hold-down device (6) is designed and arranged such that deflection of the bone plate in a region of the cut surface during contact of the hold down device with the bone plate is prevented during cutting of the plate. The hold down device is arranged such that the bone plate is brought in to an insertion direction (E) in a straight line in the cutting position. The cutting edges are rotated or pivotable against each other around a cutting rotating axis.
