The device has a confining chamber constituted of an enclosure (2) with a removable lid for receiving a sample (5). The sample is surrounded with an impermeable membrane. The enclosure is lifted by two hydraulic jacks. A manifold (14) controls the humid air that imposes capillary pressure on a lower surface of the sample. A port is formed on a sleeve (17) for controlling humid air that imposes capillary pressure on an upper surface of the sample.
