[Class 38 (iv).] Charging and discharging batteries.-A battery is divided into two parallel groups 3, 4 and resistances 5, 6 are connected, as shown in the Figure, between each group and the charging source 1, a resistance 7 being connected between the respective junctions of each resistance with its battery group. Where the full-charge voltage of an accumulator is 1-5 times its voltage when discharged, the resistance 7 may be twice the value of the equal resistances 5, 6 or greater, according as the charging current is to fall to zero or to a small value at full charge. A relay may be inserted in series with the resistance 7, or in place of it, this relay either disconnecting the battery by opening contacts 8, 10 or increasing the resistance 7 at full charge. The battery is discharged by opening the contacts 8, 9, 10 and closing the contact 11. |
