PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device, a luminaire, and a backlight device for a liquid crystal display, allowing a light modulation operation, and capable of restraining a discharge lamp from flickering by a phase shift. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device includes a plurality of inverter circuits for outputting alternating current electric powers synchronized with drive signals input respectively, to the respective different discharge lamps, an oscillator for generating the first drive signal A of the first prescribed frequency, a frequency divider for generating the second drive signal B with a two-divided frequency of the first drive signal A, and a switching circuit input with light modulation signals C, D of PWM signals, and for switching the drive signals input to the respective inverter circuits, to one of the first drive signal and the second drive signal, and corresponding to an ON/OFF state of the light modulation signal. The flickering is restrained since frequencies and phases of outputs get consistent by using the common drive signal between the plurality of inverter circuits, while allowing the light modulation by the light modulation signal.
