<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a powder detergent composition having a high alkali-buffering capacity and excellent in detergency, and to provide a method of washing clothing using the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The powder detergent composition (1) is prepared by mixing an alkali granule (a), containing a surfactant and a crystalline alkali metal silicate and having an average particle diameter of 100-1,000 μm, with a granule (b), containing an acid source and a carbon dioxide source and having an average particle diameter of 100-1,000 μm, wherein the content of the crystalline alkali metal silicate is 28-65 mass% and the pH of 1 g/L concentration of an aqueous solution at 25°C is 10-11. In the method (2) of washing clothing using the composition, carbon dioxide generated by reacting the granule (a) with the granule (b) is discharged to the outside of the washing system.
