<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device and a video display method by which an image of interest is extracted and the extracted part is displayed in a spotlight manner. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The video display device includes a back light, a transmission type display panel whose transmission to light from the back light is controlled to perform display, a detecting means of detecting a position of interest of display video, and an illumination control means of performing mask processing for making the brightness of the back light higher for an area of a display screen which corresponds to the position of interest than for the other area of the display screen other than the area or decreasing the brightness for the area other than the area of the display screen which corresponds to the position of interest of the transmission type display panel.
