A tape printer is provided that can recognize whether a tape cassette is installed at a proper position. The tape printer includes a plurality of detecting switches that protrude toward a side surface of the tape cassette installed in a cassette housing portion. If all the detecting switches are in an off state (no at S3), a message is displayed on a liquid crystal display to indicate that no tape cassette is installed (S5). If all the detecting switches are in an on state, a message is displayed to indicate that the tape cassette is not installed at the proper position (S9). Further, if a part of the detecting switches is in the on state (no at step S7), based on a combination of the on and off states of the detecting switches, a type of the tape cassette is determined and displayed (S11 and S13).
