<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device which allows proper display visibility to be secured by preventing a fault due to an optical adhesive, and to provide a manufacturing method for the device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An electrophoretic display device 1 includes an element substrate 2; a light-transmissive counter substrate 30 disposed so as to face the element substrate 2; an electro-optical layer 31 disposed between the element substrate 2 and the counter substrate 30; and a surface protection substrate 4, stuck to a surface opposite to the electro-optical layer 31 of the counter substrate 2 with the optical adhesive therebetween. On the counter substrate 30, a frame-like projecting portion 30A, which surrounds an optical adhesive-applied region and projects toward the surface protection substrate 4 and has a surface which is made rugged is formed.
