PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner for comfortably performing cleaning while saving energy. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes a control means for controlling a motor-driven blower 2, a switch 12 for detecting whether or not a suction tool 8 provided with a suction port 11 is in contact with a floor surface to be cleaned, and a dust detection means 5 for detecting sucked dust. When the suction tool 8 is separated from the floor surface to be cleaned, the control means reduces a power supply amount to the motor-driven blower 2 from the power supply amount Wa when the suction tool 8 is in contact with the floor surface to be cleaned to Wb. Therefore, the way of the reduction is determined according to the amount of dust detected per unit time by the dust detection means 5 while the suction tool 8 is in contact with the floor surface to be cleaned. For instance, in the situation where the amount of the dust on the floor surface to be cleaned is large and the dust easily stirs up, the power supply amount of the motor-driven blower is not lowered so much even when the suction tool 8 is separated from the floor surface to be cleaned and the stirring-up dust is sucked.
