<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multifunction device having an authentication function, which improves simplicity while ensuring secrecy. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The multifunction device includes: a user registration means 74, a user authentication means 75 and an operation permission means 76. When a user requests user registration, the user registration means 74 stores size data indicating the size of an object to be read recognized by a size recognizing means 72 and image data specifying an image described on the object to be read, as registration data, in a user information storage section 73 in association with data specifying the user. When the user requests authentication, the user authentication means 75 performs user authentication by comparing size data indicating the size of an object to be read recognized by the size recognizing means 72 and image data specifying an image described on the object to be read with the registration data stored in the user information storage section 73. When the user authentication means 75 succeeds in the user authentication, the operation permission means 76 enables a function permitted to the user, among a plurality of functions.
