<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a method of obtaining lumber which, in coloring of lumber, gives an impression of a color reversed in the appearance from the lumber color of natural texture and which, in other words, is light-colored for winter grains, i.e., fall lumber or late lumber and dark-colored for summer grains, i.e., spring lumber or early lumber. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The lumber is subjected to decompression lower than the atmospheric pressure in advance, is impregnated with a coloring agent under the reduced pressure, and then, is subjected to compression higher than the atmospheric pressure. In the lumber so colored by impregnating with the coloring agent, the decompressing time is made longer than the compressing time, so that the lumber having grains reversed in the appearance from the lumber of natural texture is obtained, that is, the lumber with light-colored winter grains and the lumber with dark-colored summer grains.
