Biaxially nematic liquid crystal ring compounds (I) are new. Biaxially nematic liquid crystal ring compounds of formula (I) are new. ring A1 : benzene group of formula (a), an aryl group of formulae (b)-(d), dibenzyl group of formula (e), fluoren-9-on-3,6-yl, or benzo[1,2-b,4,3-b']dithiophen-2,7-yl; A, B 1>CN or NO 2; C 1>, D 1>, F 1>, Z : N or CH; E : O, S, Se, NH or CH; X = O or S; V 1>, W 1>, X, Y 1>a spacer, which is directly bonded to one another, benzen-1,4-yl, -CH=CH-, -C?=C- or heptan-2,5-yl; ring A2, ring A3 : substituted benzene group of formulae (f)-(k), heptan-2,5-yl, pyridin-4-yl, or pyridin-3-yl; n : 1-5; Z : CN, F, H or CH 3; m : 1-15; n1 : 1-4; ring A4, ring A5 : H or ring A3; and R, R1a, R2a : H, alkyl, alkyloxy, alkylsulfanyl, oligoethylenoxy, semiperfluorinated chain or fluorinated chains.
