PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical spatial light modulator capable of performing gradation display of pixels. SOLUTION: In the multi-element spatial light modulator, each of two-dimensionally arrayed pixels includes: a plurality of optical modulation elements 5a, 5b, 5c having respectively different areas in plane view; and a pair of electrodes 2, 3. According to an increase in a current supplied to the pixel 4, the optical modulation elements to be magnetization-reversed from the optical modulation element 5a having a smaller area to the optical modulation elements 5d having the larger area are increased to switch bright-dark display or to perform bright-dark intermediate display.
