<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetostrictive torque sensor which makes detection coils multipolarized as many as possible. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetostrictive torque sensor 11 detects the torque of a rotating shaft S using the opposite effect of magnetostriction generated on the surface of the shaft. A plurality of first detection coils L1 and a plurality of second detection coils L2 are arranged so that they form two rows in the circumferential direction of the rotating shaft S. In the circumferential direction of the rotating shaft S, the first detection coils L1 and the second detection coils L2 are arranged alternately while in the axial direction of the rotating shaft S, the first detection coils L1 and the second detection coils L2 are arranged side by side.
