The invention relates to a machine for sorting postal items including both letters and large-sized objects, including a first sorting system (20) adapted for large-sized objects and including a first postal item conveyor capable of directing the large-sized objects towards rack-type sorting outlets (26) in which the large-sized objects fall by gravity, and a second sorting system (1) adapted for letters and including a second postal item conveyor capable of directing letters towards compactor-type sorting outlets (7) in which the letters are stacked on the edges one after the other. The two sorting systems have the same number of sorting outlets, the sorting outlets of the first sorting system being vertically adjacent to the sorting outlets of the second sorting system, respectively.
