The present invention relates to a data input device including a plurality of direction indicating and position input units constituting a single input unit arranged radially within an input radius from a center position, a plurality of sensing units having sensors, and a control unit. The data input device allows a user to input two or more directions consecutively to input data. The input unit of a portable electronic device having a narrow space sequentially performs a plurality of movement combinations in a radial direction from a reference position along the movements corresponding to first to sixth direction input actions so as to quickly and accurately input desired characters through a sequence of input actions while minimizing space for input actions.
