PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying carnitine by reducing impurities produced by side reactions, and to provide highly pure carnitine having reduced impurities. SOLUTION: The highly pure carnitine can be produced by adding an alcohol solvent to a carnitine mixture comprising at least one compound chosen from a compound represented by formula (1): R<SB>2</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>-CHR<SB>1</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>-COOH (wherein R<SB>1</SB>is a hydroxy group or a carbon-carbon double bond formed between the carbon at β position; and R<SB>2</SB>is a cyano group, a hydroxy group, an amide group; a primary, secondary or tertiary amino group or a carboxy group, provided that R<SB>2</SB>may be bound to the oxygen in one of the carboxy groups to form a ring), a trimethylammonium compound, an acidic substance, salts and betaines.
