PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide small molecule, nonpeptide caspase inhibitors that are potent, stable, and penetrate membranes to generate effective inhibition of apoptosis in vivo. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I is provided where X is CH or N; Y is halo, trifluorophenoxy, or tetrafluorophenoxy; R2is 1-6C straight chained or branched alkyl; R3is hydrogen, halo, OCF3, SR, CN, CF3, and R4 represernts hydrogen, halo, OCF3, SR, CN, CF3, Ar, or the like.
