<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a master cylinder for securing good sliding performance of a piston when forging-formed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The piston 18 has a restricting part 97 provided on the inner peripheral face of a cylindrical part 71 for abutting on a retainer 120 to restrict the movement of the retainer 120 in the radial direction of the piston 18, and an annular groove 99 provided on a bottom part 72 and forging-formed ranging from the restricting part 97 continuously to the outer peripheral end of the bottom part 72. The retainer 120 abuts on a flat part 98 at the inner periphery side beyond the annular groove 99 of the bottom part 72, and its outer peripheral end abuts on the restricting part 97.
