METHODS OF PROCESSING ENSILED BIOMASS

Ensiled biomass can be effectively hydrolysed for fermentation to bioethanol or other products without requirement for chemical or heat pretreatment. Two-step hydrolysis involving an initial amylase treatment of unpretreated silage leads to better overall conversion than can be achieved through hydrolysis of pretreated material. Unhydrolysed silage components can be recovered from the initial hydrolysis and subsequently subject to pretreatment and further enzymatic hydrolysis.
