The material measure (20) has an incremental code track provided with transparent bright fields (22) and opaque dark fields (24) alternatively arranged in a measurement direction (26). The bright fields and the dark fields exhibit widths in the measurement direction, where the width of the bright fields is smaller than the width of the dark fields. Width difference is larger than o.5 micrometer and smaller than 20 micrometer, where the material measure is illuminated by an illumination unit (10) with light emitted by a LED. An independent claim is also included for a position measuring device comprising an illumination unit and a receiver unit.
