Organic compounds are dehydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst comprising 30 to 45 weight per cent magnesium oxide, 10 to 35 weight per cent ferric oxide, 3 to 6 weight per cent chromium sesquioxide or cupric oxide, and at least 30 weight per cent potassium carbonate. The ingredients of the catalyst are mixed, pelleted, dried and heated at 1050 DEG to 1300 DEG F. The organic compound, which may be a mono-olefin having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, or an alkylbenzene or alkylpyridine with 1 to 4 alkyl groups, each group having 6 or less carbon atoms with at least one alkyl group of 2 or more carbon atoms, is contacted with the catalyst at 1050 DEG to 1300 DEG F. with a steam to olefin ratio between 5 to 1 and 30 to 1 by volume. The catalyst may be a fixed bed or fluidized. In examples catalysts are prepared and used to dehydrogenate butene-2. |
