PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL device that is thinned while ensuring moisture barrier properties, and suppresses the occurrence of short circuit by self repairing. SOLUTION: An organic EL element 3 includes a translucent electrode 4, a functional layer 7 formed on the translucent electrode 4 and including at least an organic light emitting layer, and a back electrode 9 formed on the functional layer 7. A barrier layer 8 having at least the moisture barrier properties are formed between the functional layer 7 and the back electrode 9 or in the back electrode 9. The barrier layer 8 has a film thickness of≤50 nm. The barrier layer 8 is formed between the functional layer 7 and the back electrode 9, and has a conduction band energy level of 2.0-5.5 eV.
