PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain superior startability when an engine is in the course of starting between the initial explosion and complete explosion by extending cranking duration, and when the engine does not reach the initial explosion, to reduce load to a battery by making the cranking duration within a set period of time. SOLUTION: When a driver turns a push switch 12 ON, preheating is started through the heat generation of a glow plug 4, and after prescribed preheating is completed, a starter relay 6 is turned ON. Cranking is then started (S2), and at this time, whether the engine is in the middle of starting is checked by fluctuation of engine speed (S4). When the engine is in the middle of starting, a cranking duration time (tim) is restricted by a value obtained by adding a preset extension timeαto a reference starting time (To). When the engine is in the course of starting, because the cranking duration (tim) is extended by only the extension timeαfrom the reference starting time (To), superior startability can be obtained.
