<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more effectively suppress flicker when driving a liquid crystal element by AC to perform display. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal device includes: a liquid crystal panel which includes a pixel electrode and a common electrode for generating an electric field between the common electrode itself and the pixel electrode and has an AC voltage applied between the pixel electrode and the common electrode to drive liquid crystal; a driving circuit for applying a common voltage to the common electrode; a light detection means for detecting the intensity of light irradiated to the liquid crystal panel; and a common voltage changing means for changing the common voltage applied to the common electrode by the driving circuit, in accordance with the detection result of the light detection means.
