PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device and a method for operating the same are provided to reduce power consumption by controlling an error allowance rate according to a distance to a user. CONSTITUTION: An image processor(4) controls a data error rate according to distance information from a distance sensor(18). The image processor calculates a reference gray value and a gain value according to the controlled data error rate. The image processor modulates/outputs data by the calculated gain value. The image processor controls/outputs a dimming value. An inverter(14) operates a backlight according to the dimming value.
