PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical switch capable of making its size so small as to exceed the diffraction limit of light. SOLUTION: The optical switch comprises a propagation control part 102 having: a first propagation part 121 which is constituted with material capable of generating plasmon and is extended in the propagation direction of light; and a second propagation part 122 which is constituted with a dielectric and is extended in the propagation direction of light while being in contact with the first propagation part 121. The first propagation part 121 is composed of, for example, material which is subjected to Mott transition, such as BiTiO<SB>3</SB>having a perovskite structure and the second propagation part 122 is composed of SiO<SB>2</SB>. Further, the optical switch comprises an electrode 123 and an electrode 124 which are disposed in contact with the first propagation part 121 and apply a voltage to the first propagation part 121. By applying the voltage to the electrodes 123, 124, the first propagation part 121 can be subjected to Mott transition. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
