<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of obtaining excellent image quality by accurately detecting the light quantity of reflected light corresponding to the density of a toner image. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a rotatable image holder having an image area where a reference toner image for measuring the density of the toner image is formed and a reference surface area whose surface is roughened and where the toner image is not formed; and a detection means emitting detection light toward the image holder, receiving the reflected light reflected to the reference toner image, to detect the light quantity of the reflected light and receiving the reflected light reflected to the reference surface area, to detect the light quantity of the reflected light.
