<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an opened/closed eye recognizing apparatus suitable for determining opening and closing state of an eye of a subject on the basis of the facial expression. <P>SOLUTION: A computer 30 acquires, from a camera 10, a face image obtained by capturing an image of a subject and estimates a facial expression of the subject from the acquired face image. Next, the computer determines an eye opening degree of the subject from the face image and establishes, based on the estimated facial expression of the subject, a threshold value for the eye opening degree. If the eye opening degree exceeds the threshold value, the computer determines that the eyes of the subject are open.
