The light source (10) has a housing (12) accommodating a xenon short arc lamp (18) thermally connected to a heat sink (36). Several heat pipes (40,42) are inserted into the holes formed in heat sink for dissipating heat generated by the lamp to heat sink. A thermally conductive paste is applied between heat pipes and heat sinks so as to optimize heat conduction.
