There is provided a thermal printer capable of achieving a balance between left and right head pressure even when a support shaft is not in parallel with a platen roller due to the variations of components and assemblies and of ensuring a desired print quality even with an inexpensive component configuration. A pivotally supporting portion (82) is provided that straddles in the width direction of a medium to be printed and positions and supports a thermal head (12) in the carrying direction of the medium to be printed. The thermal head (12) is supported by the pivotally supporting portion (82) so as to be able to swing centered on the middle in the width direction, from side to side, in a direction perpendicular to a printing surface. Consequently, even when the pivotally supporting portion (82) is not in parallel with a platen roller (11) due to the variations of components and assemblies, the thermal head (12) is swung centered on the middle in the width direction and is pressed in parallel against the platen roller (11).
