PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner which prevents a user from erroneously holding a dust collecting container handle. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes: a dust collecting container 6 provided with a dust collecting chamber 12 for catching dust sucked by an electric blower 5; a dust collecting container housing portion 25 for housing the dust collecting container 6; a body 1 provided with the electric blower 5 and the dust collecting container housing portion 25; a freely turnable dust collecting container handle 7 for taking out the dust collecting container 6 from the dust collecting container housing portion 25; a connecting means (not shown in the figure) for fixing and connecting the dust collecting container handle 7 with the body 1 in the state of housing it at a prescribed position; and a hose presence/absence detecting means (not shown in the figure) for detecting whether or not a hose (not shown in the figure) is connected to the body 1. The dust collecting container handle 7 is fixed and connected in a housed state when the hose is connected to the body 1, and fixation and connection are released when the hose is not connected. Since a user can not perform cleaning while holding the dust collecting container handle 7 erroneously, the body 1 does not damage a floor surface by fall down and the body 1 is not broken.
